The Greater L.A. Chapter JACL will present “Standing Out as Hapa,” a virtual Zoom program, on Sunday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m.
Three of GLA’s biracial young adult members, Andrew Gruhn, Erica Harris and Mylee Sumoge, will be a panel. Topics to be covered include how they see themselves as Hapa and discrimination they may have encountered. Discrimination may not have been major incidents, but microaggressions are significant and need to be acknowledged as discrimination.
Gruhn was a 2015 GLA scholarship awardee. He graduated in 2019 with a degree from UC Riverside’s College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. He will be applying to nursing schools this year. He is a GLA board member and young adults group leader.
Harris came from Warner Robins, Ga. to attend Long Beach City College in 2018. Graduating from LBCC, she will be attending San Diego State University in the fall. She is GLA recording secretary.
Sumoge was a 2020 GLA scholarship awardee. She attends UC Santa Barbara.
