【??? ??? ??? ??? ??】Enter to watch online.John Krasinski's virtual high school prom was truly a night to remember

A week before my 27th birthday I decided to spend my Friday night attending a virtual high school prom.

It might sound pathetic,??? ??? ??? ??? ?? but I've been social distancing at home for 49 days, and am honestly in the mood to have any shred of that thing we used to know as "fun." Also, it was hosted (and DJed!) by my celebrity crush, John Krasinski.

Krasinski, who's made it his mission to lift people's spirits during this tough time, recently created Some Good News(SGN), a weekly feel-good YouTube show (and accompanying Twitter account) that he uses to share people's most inspiring, mood-boosting stories.

On Wednesday night, Krasinski switched things up a bit and announced that Some Good Newswould also be throwing a virtual prom on YouTube Live for all the high school students who won't be able to attend their own proms this year. He promised that the prom would have a few surprise guests, and he even posted an official invitation and joined TikTok to hype up the party.

The virtual event didn't disappoint, and if you missed it, fear not. You can now relive Krasinski's YouTube prom in all its glory by watching the forth episode of Some Good News, which casually features a Brad Pitt cameo. (Prom coverage starts around 7:00.)

My own high school prom was fun,but I wouldn't say it was a night to remember. I danced, ate, and hung out with friends, but I flew solo and the night definitely didn't live up to the magical prom expectations I'd built from watching too many rom-coms.

I was confident that this virtual prom — which is literally taking place during a pandemic — would be memorable. So I got dressed up, decorated my living room a bit, and sat in front of my laptop to see what Krasinski had in store.

The big event

Though the livestream only lasted around 30 minutes, it was jam-packed with delightful entertainment. Krasinski kicked off the prom by video chatting with Marli Odgers and her dad, who recently went viral for their sweet living room prom dance, and then he got to DJing. After playing some Shaggy and a few seconds of "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge, Krasinski welcomed his first celebrity guest: the Rainn Wilson.

The former Officeco-stars caught up and joked around a bit, and then Krasinski started blasting and dancing to one of his favorite songs, "All We Got" by Chance the Rapper. Before you knew you it, Jim Halpert and Dwight K. Schrute were sharing the screen and dancing with Chance himself. What a freaking flex.

Krasinski made a near-seamless transition from video chatting with Chance the Rapper to video chatting with the Jonas Brothers, who performed their hit song, "Sucker," and recalled how they never actually got to go to their own prom.

Before the virtual event wrapped up, Krasinski welcomed one of the world's biggest Officefans, Billie Eilish, and her brother Finneas O'Connell. The two performed "Bad Guy" for viewers, and Krasinski and Eilish even bonded over her song, "My Strange Addiction," which samples audio from The Office.

Before he abandoned his prom-hosting duties for the night, Krasinski announced one last surprise: DJ D-Nice would be hosting a virtual afterparty on his Instagram page. He then signed off with an emotional message for all the teens out there.

"I didn't know if any of my friends would show up, but they all did. And guess what guys, they did not show up for me," Krasinski said. "They showed up all for you and I really need you to know that."

"We are all going through this together," he continued. "This is a very very weird time, and each and every one of you are missing something. This is the least I could do — embarrassing myself to the full extent for you. And I couldn't be more proud to do it."

The SGN prom was a vital success

Not only was the night filled with solid music, a bunch of laughs, and some phenomenal virtual company, but the prom and afterparty meant so much to so many people. When Krasinski first went live, around 86,500 people were watching the stream. Toward the end of the stream, viewers surpassed 214,000.

For those already out of high school, like myself, the virtual event acted as a delightful distraction from the soul-crushing negativity in the world. But for teens who knew they'd likely be missing out on their real prom nights, it meant the world. From the very first day Krasinski announced the YouTube event, excitement rippled throughout Twitter. Teens started shooting their shots and asking celebrities like Steve Carell and David Dobrik to be their dates, and many vowed to get dressed up (complete with hair and makeup) in their would-be prom night attire. Some people even dug up their old prom photos in honor of the occasion.

After the event wrapped up, many Twitter users shared their deep gratitude for Krasinski's livestream, and they posted photographs of themselves at their makeshift prom celebrations using the hashtag #SGNProm.

The event doesn't make up for the fact that many teens won't be able to physically attend proms with their classmates, but instead of sitting back and doing nothing, Krasinski made the effort to rally his friends and give high school students around the world a damn good alternative. Talk about a great dad.

Ultimately, the night was a genuinely fun, heartening success. Today's teens can now brag that Rainn Wilson, Chance the Rapper, the Jonas Brothers, Billie Eilish, and Finneas were at their prom, and I can finally say that I slow danced at one with a crush.
