NEW YORK —?The nominees for the 70thannual Tony Awards were announced on May 3, and “Allegiance” —?a new musical about the Japanese American World War II experience —?was not among them.

As expected, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” received a record number of nominations, 16. In the Best Musical category, “Hamilton” will compete with “Bright Star,” “Waitress,” “School of Rock — The Musical,” and “Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.”

Earlier this year, Lea Salonga and Telly Leung, who played siblings Kei and Sam in “Allegiance,” were considered eligible for best leading actress/actor in a musical, but the nominations went to: Actor — Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Christopher Jackson, “Hamilton”; Brandon Victor Dixon, “Shuffle Along”; Christopher Fitzgerald, “Waitress.” Actress —?Danielle Brooks, “The Color Purple”; Renee Elise Goldsberry, “Hamilton”; Jane Krakowski, “She Loves Me”; Jennifer Simard, “Disaster!”: Adrienne Warren, “Shuffle Along.”

Salonga, who returned to Broadway for the first time in a decade for “Allegiance,” won a Tony in 1991 for playing Kim in the musical “Miss Saigon.”

“Waitress” received four Tony nods, but cast member Kimiko Glenn (“Orange Is the New Black”) was not nominated.

Donyale Werle and Darrel Maloney were considered eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Musical category for their work in “Allegiance,” but the nominations went to: Es Devlin and Finn Ross, “American Psycho”; David Korins, “Hamilton”; Santo Loquasto, “Shuffle Along”; David Rockwell, “She Loves Me.”

“Allegiance,” actor/activist George Takei’s passion project, closed on Feb. 14 after 37 previews and 113 regular performances. It was not the only musical snubbed by the Tonys; “Amazing Grace” also got zero nominations. “Tuck Everlasting,” “Disaster!” and “On Your Feet!” only got one nomination each.

The Tonys ceremony will be broadcast on CBS on June 12.
