TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is phim sex thusaluting actor Sessue Hayakawa (1886-1973) on Monday evenings this month.
May 13: “Tokyo Joe” (1949) at 5 p.m. An American in post-war Japan (Humphrey Bogart) gets caught up in the black market. Hayakawa plays the ruthless Baron Kimura, who blackmails Bogey.
“Daughter of the Dragon” (1931) at 8:45 p.m. A Chinese princess, Ling Moy (Anna May Wong), learns she is the daughter of the warlord Fu Manchu (Warner Oland). Hayakawa plays Ah Kee, a Chinese detective working with Scotland Yard.
May 20: “House of Bamboo” (1955) at 5 p.m. An Army investigator (Robert Ryan) infiltrates a Tokyo crime syndicate to solve a colleague’s murder. Hayakawa plays Kito, a police inspector.
“Green Mansions” (1959) at 7 p.m. A young adventurer, Abel (Anthony Perkins), falls in love with a mystical woman, Rima (Audrey Hepburn), in the South American jungle. Hayakawa plays Runi, Rima’s father.
“Hell to Eternity” (1960) at 9 p.m. Guy Gabaldon (Jeffrey Hunter), who was adopted by Japanese Americans, becomes a World War II hero. Hayakawa plays Gen. Matsui. Based on a true story.
May 27: “Three Came Home” (1950) at 5 p.m. During World War II, American author Agnes Newton Keith (Claudette Colbert) is imprisoned by the Japanese in various POW camps in North Borneo and Sarawak. Hayakawa plays Col. Suga.
“The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957) at 7 p.m. British POWs are forced to build a railway bridge for their Japanese captors in occupied Burma, not knowing that Allied forces are planning to destroy it. Hayakawa received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Col. Saito, the camp commandant.
