The issue appears to be stemming from Akamai, a major content delivery network (CDN) provider.
A CDN helps online platforms deliver services to users faster by utilizing servers distributed around the world. But when a major CDN fails, it can take down large swaths of the internet with it. This has happened before.
In a statement posted on its website, Akamai says "We are aware of an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service."
